Alberta Woman Detained Over COVID Test

When Chris Mathis’ wife Niki returned to Calgary from a US trip on January 28th, she thought she had fulfilled the necessary test requirements to arrive home to Canada.  She boarded her flight from the US with proof of her test, however she didn’t realize that she had a Rapid Antigen Test, not the PCR that is required for Canada, until she landed in Calgary.

In a Facebook post on Thursday night, Mathis claimed his wife was “greeted by a Police Officer and an AHS official. They rejected her results and told her she needed to go immediately to an isolation facility. She was told if she resisted she would be arrested.”

Concerned for his wife, Mathis says he asked to speak with on the phone with the Police Officer and the Alberta Public Health Official who were with his wife.  He says he spoke with the police officer who he asked for his name and badge number and the officer would not give it to him and reiterated what his wife said, that she would be arrested for not complying. He says he asked for a location of where she was being taken and was denied again.

“I pushed, I questioned, I tried to fight but they said they would arrest her if she resisted. They would NOT give me any information on where they were taking my wife.  She was not allowed to get her vehicle from the airport, she was immediately put in a white van surrounded by police escorts and taken to an unknown facility that is under full surveillance and has security at every entrance and exit.”

When Canadian Travel News spoke with Mathis at 12:30pm ET on Friday, he said his wife is still waiting for someone to test her.  He said he was only able to know her whereabouts due to the tracking feature on her iPhone, which is an old hotel just on the outskirts of Calgary Airport.

Canadian Travel News reached out to CBSA, The Calgary Police and Alberta Public Health for comment.  We asked for the quarantine locations, how a traveler without the correct test was able to board a flight to Canada and what protocol is at the airport for testing travelers.

At the time of writing, only the CBSA has responded, directing us to Canada Public Health, saying,

“None of (your) questions are for the CBSA to address. The CBSA can only speak to its role, which was explained below. Once a traveller is admitted into Canada, the responsibility to monitor and track the individuals from a public health perspective is not within the scope or mandate of the CBSA. When questions arise with regards to either a traveller’s health status, quarantine plan or their COVID test documents the traveller will be referred to a Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) staff member who will make the final determination.”

Today’s the Trudeau government announced mandatory testing on arrival in Canada and a $2,000 quarantine in a government facility while awaiting results.

ARCH Disability Law Centre Statement on the Potential Suspension of the Health Care Consent Act

January 28, 2021

ARCH Disability Law Centre is alarmed to learn that the Ontario Critical Command Centre is seeking an Executive Order to suspend certain provisions of the Health Care Consent Act (HCCA).

Currently, the HCCA requires doctors to get the consent of a patient, or if the patient is not able to consent, the consent of the patient’s family before providing or withdrawing any treatment. The Executive Order would effectively permit doctors to withdraw treatment from a patient without the consent of the patient or family. It would come into effect in the event that hospitals have more patients than resources, and would accompany Ontario’s Triage Protocol. It would last only for a temporary period of time.

Granting doctors such unilateral decision-making power is an extraordinary measure that would have long-lasting and devastating effects. It is an extreme step that is contrary to Ontario’s established legal regime. As set out by the Supreme Court of Canada in the seminal decision of Rasouli, a patient’s right to make decisions about their own body “has historically been viewed as trumping all other interests, including what physicians may think is in the patient’s best interests.” (Cuthbertson v Rasouli, 2013 SCC 53 at para 19)The HCCA gives effect to this right insofar as possible.

The HCCA contemplates disputes between physicians and the wishes of the patient. In the event of disagreement over the plan of care (including removal of care), the HCCA sets out a mechanism for resolution through which the physician can apply to the Consent and Capacity Board, a quasi-judicial body with specialized jurisdiction over matters related to consent to medical treatment.

In other words, if the physician does not have consent to remove care, they will have to satisfy the Board that such removal of treatment is in the best interest of the patient. These provisions of the HCCA, while not perfect, create an important system of checks and balances in the delivery of health care. The Board is specifically situated to navigate the difficult scenario of when the patient’s wishes are at odds with the physician’s proposed plan of care.

Suspending these provisions places the integrity of Ontario’s legal and health care system in precarious territory and risks egregious Charter violations. Giving unfettered discretion to even the most well-intentioned physicians to withdraw care without consent and without an appeal mechanism, is a dangerous move that would shock and offend the general public.

The importance of oversight and appeal mechanisms in health care cannot be overstated. This was made abundantly clear in the recommendations and submissions made by ARCH and other advocacy groups to the Bioethics Table during summer consultations regarding the Triage Protocol. These recommendations were not adopted.

The Ontario government has remained silent on this. This is further demonstrative of the lack of transparency that disability organizations, including ARCH, have been decrying since April 2020.

The checks and balances set out in the HCCA are truly the last resort for any patient (or their family) who disagrees with removing critical care. ARCH calls upon the government to immediately make public the Ontario Critical Command Centre’s request. ARCH implores the government to not suspend the HCCA – the lives of Ontarians, and the fundamental right to make decisions about what happens to one’s own body are at stake.

З свого боку, аби допомогти тілу бути здоровим, зробив коктейль з суничок-полуничок і кавуна, приблизно півлітра.
Додав туди столову ложку меду, десь із 50 мл саморобного яблучно-виноградного вина (аби розслабитися), запив цим коктейлем полівітамінку
Тепер піду у гарячу ванну на годинку відпочити.
Потім - цілющий сон.

Отримав другу дозу о 19:24 

Відчуваю, як активуються імунні клітини, все швидше  і швидше навчаючись впізнавати Заразу і як з нею боротися.

A Red Deer mom has told of her anguish after watching her son being detained at the Calgary airport, loaded into a van, and taken to an undisclosed isolation centre.

Rebekah McDonald was at the airport late Saturday night, hoping to welcome her son, Ethan, back to Calgary from Arizona.

McDonald hadn’t seen her son for two years.

But the joy soon turned to tears when her son was taken into custody for having what the Canadian federal government considers the wrong COVID-19 test.

“They are saying it’s not accurate and they are wanting to take him to a quarantine facility. They won’t let me talk to him. They won’t let me see him. They won’t come and talk to me. The border patrol services say they have nothing to do with it – they won’t tell me who has to do with it,” said McDonald in a social media video as she walked through the airport concourse.

“They won’t tell me who’s picking him up. They won’t tell me where he’s going. They won’t tell me anything.

“They say he doesn’t have a choice, that it’s the law. They say I don’t have the right to talk to him. They are taking him against my will and his will and I’m not okay with it. I don’t know what to do about it and I don’t know where I’m supposed to find him.

Children 12 and older now cleared to receive Pfizer vaccine: Health Canada

OTTAWA -- Health Canada says the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine is now safe to give to children ages 12 and up.

Є якась частина водіїв, які регулярно порушують ПДР і з кожним штрафом біжать в суд оскаржувати. Як правило в судах побажливо відносяться до таких апеляцій. Особливо коли це студент або хтось із низьким доходом. Суддя або переполовинює штраф, або анулюює штрафні бали за це порушення, або і повністю анулює протокол за порушення. Звісно, за щось дрібне. Подвійне перевищення швидкості чи бути за кермом під шофе не пробачать нізащо. А ще часом коп не має змоги прийти на той розбір в суд, а присутність копа який виписав штраф там обов‘язкова, і штраф без присутності копа анулюється АВТОМАТИЧНО. Хитровани цим широко користуються.

Зараз суди, ЯК І ВСЕ ІНШЕ, працює з обмеженнями. І ті хитровани вирішили, що всі їх художества на дорогах зійдуть їм з рук. Вони похєрять штрафи і за це їм нічого не буде. Але машина працює як годинник, єдине те, що час апеляцій дійсно затягуюється. І хитровимаханих почали позбавляти водійських посвідчень, як злісних неплатильщиків штрафів.

Одною з основних ознак нормальної країни це є НЕЗВОРОТНІСТЬ ПОКАРАННЯ за злочин чи проступок. Не пропетляєш закосивши під дурачка. І це є ґуд.

Ontario government to require COVID-19 vaccine certificates for many indoor public settings

Officials announced that as of Sept. 22, Ontario residents will need to show proof of full vaccination (having received two doses at least 14 days before entry) along with photo ID in order to access the following settings: Restaurants, bars, nightclubs, meeting and event spaces, gyms and fitness facilities (exception for youth recreational sports), sports events, casinos, gaming establishments, concerts, music festivals, theatres, cinemas, strip clubs, bathhouses, and racing venues.

As of Oct. 22, the Ontario government is scheduled to roll out a new QR code-based application for residents and business operators to use in order for scans. Officials said new certificates similar to the current PDF ones will be issued. The new documents will contain a unique QR code that when scanned will display the holder’s current vaccination status (yes or no) and the person’s name.

Ontario government to require COVID-19 vaccine certificates for many indoor public settings
Officials announced that as of Sept. 22, Ontario residents will need to show proof of full vaccination (having received two doses at least 14 days before entry) along with photo ID in order to access the following settings: Restaurants, bars, nightclubs, meeting and event spaces, gyms and fitness facilities (exception for youth recreational sports), sports events, casinos, gaming establishments, concerts, music festivals, theatres, cinemas, strip clubs, bathhouses, and racing venues.

As of Oct. 22, the Ontario government is scheduled to roll out a new QR code-based application for residents and business operators to use in order for scans. Officials said new certificates similar to the current PDF ones will be issued. The new documents will contain a unique QR code that when scanned will display the holder’s current vaccination status (yes or no) and the person’s name.
